Starting a poll thread is a common activity. Folks make polls about all kinds of things. But sometimes polls are established during a flame war (usually near the end of hostilities). There are two ways that this tactic is normaly used in a flame war:
1. To establish a victory. A warrior who has been pummeling some sorry sap may start a poll, based on the flame war topic, in order to get a consensus from the board as to the superiority of his/her position.
2. To find support. A warrior who is losing a battle may start a poll to draw other, more able combatants to his/her aid.
Polling for victory or aid is not a strong tactic. Although a victory poll is less likely to backfire (particularly if the poller is a strong and respected warrior on the forum), the support poll is rarely effective, and often is the last whimper on the road to defeat.

I don't typically care for polls. Sometimes it's nice for a little overkill, but for the most part you're better off just grinding someone into dust the hard and effective way. _________________

Aye. As I mentioned in the description, it's not a particulary effective tactic. I saw it used a few times on Amirican Idol's forum, as well as Mystic Wicks. It's mostly kids I've seen do it.
