Now there's blue flashes "above" the plant. It's only one worker who's seen this and said something.
If this is the same radiation that's seen when it's under water, then it means there's a bucket load not covered with water and the blue is the radiation passing through steam or smoke above the plant. (ie any medium where the particles can travel faster then the light can in a dense medium. )
Edit, I should mention I was being a little funny, the blue flashes is obviously something to do with ionized excited air, discharging. Doesn't plutonium flash when it gets near it's critical mass or something.  Don't worry, now I am being funny, but not the ha ha way.

The huge problem here, is the inability to get anyone close enough to know what is going on. That a camera/robot can't get close enough just makes it a huge clusterfuck. That the same thing can happen at any nuclear plant illustrates, in a truly terrible way, the real problem with nuclear power.
If things go seriously wrong, you now can't get close enough to do anything about it. Hell, you can't get close enough to know what is even happening.
It's about as fucked a situation as can be possible.

The next gen plants are going to have to be built
Underground at a great depth for impact survival
That in the event of complete loss of computer and human control the process will bring itself to a safe state.

Tokyo (CNN) -- Japan began dumping thousands of tons of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean on Monday, an emergency move officials said was needed to curtail a worse leak from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
In all, about 11,500 tons of radioactive water that has collected at the nuclear facility will be dumped into the sea, officials said Monday, as workers also try to deal with a crack that has been a conduit for contamination.
The radiation levels were highest in the water from reactor No. 6, the officials said.

Anyhow, Yeah, it's funny, I was watching the Japan news from a few days ago (I don't understand the language but I do understand numbers) and the video clearly showed water leaving the storm drain system.
The eight inch crack near reactor 2 doesn't help either, but t is rather telling of how much thought was put in against overall cost of constructing the project.

The problem overlooked is the effect on the heath of the sea in the immediate areas.
No one yet can predict damage in dna to various organisms, increase in cancerous growths and how it could impact the outbreak of any background viruses which don't flourish in normally healthy populations.
Though I think radiation levels in seawater close to the plant are high enough to cause eventual cell failure / death in fish.

Fucked would be the first responders to the Chernobyl explosion. Of the over 1500 volunteer and professional firefighters who responded, less then 20 are still alive. What got them? This is gonna blow your mind: A large part of it was inhaled graphite. Which isn't radioactive in and of itself, but is used as a shielding material in some reactor designs. It's also highly poisonous to humans if ingested either intentionally or by accident. But graphite as most people know, is actually fairly fragile without a bonding material. Whewn they turned the hoses on, it sent pieces of it flying everywhere, to end up right in the respiratory tracts of first responders.
Think about that next time you get tempted to chew on a pencil.

They'll also tell you drinking vodka will save your life, and that the government of Finland didn't decide it needed to effectively cull every reindeer being raised by farmers due to worries over groundwater contamination.
That said, it's really not the radiation that's dangerous when you're talking about any kind of unclear event. It's the fallout. Just like living near a coal power plant, you're breathing in toxic waste which is also radioactive. It may take weeks, months, or even years to kill you, but in most cases it will.

Ha! I just saw a news report, it was Greenpeace that declared it a 7 three weeks ago, based on their radiation readings outside the evacuation zone.
Looks like the US was right, 50 miles out is a good distance.
