Not sure if this one has been done before, but this usually a newbie (maybe a lurker) who, despite being an unknown, starts posting into a forum about something controversial or trying to change the prevailing attitude of the forum. They will often start multiple threads along the same lines and have the majority of the forum disagreeing with them, their arguments shredded..
This ends relatively quickly (after a few days), with the person concerned declaring that their entire persona was a lie and their posts were experiments to see how they swarm would react. In other words, they declare that the joke is on the forum and that their social experiment was a success. It's a lie, but anything for them to try and save their last shred of dignity. |

Thanks for the suggestion.
For the most part they sound like an Issues who finally realises they should retreat.
Retreats take a few forms, most common are cries of "trolled" to a skeptical forum. It was an experiment, is something I've only the faintest memory of from an episode of some cross posters in newsgroups. _________________ The important thing is knowing who owns the fence |
