Guess how many of us have been totally owned by silence?

Already has been suggested, and it's a terrible tactic. I usually assume that the other person has run off after they don't reply for days upon days, but post elsewhere in the forum.

For the most part I'd say that silence ensues an opponent can not think of a sufficient retort, and I would call that defeat. Generally having the last word is a sign of victory - however, if it were put to the judges then it would probably have more to do with who's flames were the most effective. Winning an argument over the internet does not particularly mean that you're right and they're wrong (if you're in fact arguing over anything specific) but the victor is usually the one who emerges with the inflated ego.

That said, some warriors may find an opponent so utterly tedious or beneath them that they simply ignore said opponent - or pass said opponent down to lesser warriors to be hacked to death.

It's a about as loud as a golf clap, actually.

Silence is a catch 22 of sorts

true, certain people usually use it as "meh, this peon isn't worth my time", but OTOH, in internet logic, silence usually = giving up, so meh.

If you're interested in "winning", silence only works if you've got the crowd on your side. If the other guy is wildly unpopular already, taking a stand that virtually nobody agrees on, or obviously making a fool of himself with bad arguments, then it's pretty easy to either bow out altogether or write a smug "there's obviously no point to this" last word before departing the field. But if it's a close thing or you're on the retreat, silence will be seen as a sign that you've given up.

Still, there's a time for cutting your losses, and if you're getting thoroughly owned it's way better to shut up now instead of spending another four days embarassing yourself. If you shut up, people remember that you lost. If you keep being a Target for a few more days, people remember that you're an idiot.

Well, At one of the forums I frequent, this very matter came up in a debate about abortion.

Basically, the guy against abortion was a forum veteran, well respected, won his debates 9 out of 10 times, and guy for abortion was a newbie who had I think maybe 30-35 posts to his name.

Anyway, in the beginning of the debate, the newb just had some crummy posts with flawed logic, etc, and when the vet didn't respond, right away the newb got cocky and pretty much went "Hah, he's not responding cause he knows I'm right", while meanwhile, the vet, as well as a few other people pretty much said "Actually, the silence is pretty much because you're not worth wasting time on and you're a retard."

Rallan, as you said, since the vet was popular, in this case, silence worked in his favor, but it very well *could have* been seen as cowardness if he wasn't that popular.

Very few. The only time this is an effective tactic is after a long running battle, when one combatant tells the other "I'm done with you" and then actually follows through.

Silence doesn't work, but I've seen people respond only using periods or smilies.

A thread on Stallion Cornell's Moist Board went on pages with the members quoting one another and only using various smilies, each time adding a new one as a response.

Silence from an admin is only golden when it’s head to head and the person has been ousted after listening to his pleas in your last e-mail to inform him “The End”.

I host several gaming sites for free game add-one files with pretty specific rules for how you can use a given site.
G-rated “be friendly” stuff, and don’t cheat to download more than what’s free if you don’t want to pay.

Anyway, it’s a different story for web site owners than flame warriors.
If you are a well known best web site owner for a given site, and another similar site makes a point of attacking you and your site for whatever reason on theirs, a really effective defensive is to just post a poignant rebuilt and never return to their site.

In short, the “pfff, like you matter”.

The same goes for e-mail.
I just add them to my auto-bounce back e-mail program and never read them.
Sure, that infuriates some, but hey, it’s called payback.

Few can reach “Admin/Ninja” status at the same time so don’t be discouraged.
Pick your fights and yes, silence is a powerful tool if you have the clout to make it meaningful.

hahahha, sorry, but I can't help but comment on Darling Regan's constant "every post" sig stuff here...
My god.. what are you trying to make up for by having a post that takes up most of a screen for a one line text post again and again with all your crap pics and such?

I don't know about the rest of you, and I'm new here, but does anyone enjoy having to scroll though half a screen of bullsiht you seen hundereds of times to read one of actual post text?

DR was one of our most effective trolls, though she trolled while we were aware of what she was doing, due to her having been banned earlier as "Poison Lotus", so her sig was mainly to annoy us. And probably so that irritus would resize it and she would be able to scream admin abuse...

She finally slipped towards the end, and posted porn in Suggestions, and was banned for it. She's also a rabid Frasier Fan...

I second that.

D_R wasn't even a good troll, she was just a spamtard who wouldn't shut up. The only reason she avoided a ban for so long is we tend to have lax rules and people love beating up stupid trolls. It's why she was driven to overtly break the rules and get herself banned: she was too arrogant to openly give up and too stupid to win. The same goes for our recent spamtard, who purposely spammed topics so he could cry admin abuse when we dumped his threads into Purgatory. He retreated crying, "Victory!"

Of course my fav porn poster has to be the alltime idiot champion ATVile.

Not only did the imbecile post a picture of a dude getting fucked in the ass by another dude, but claimed it was not porn because one of the dicks was a strap on.

That has to be some kind of record for the longest bout of eating your own shit and calling it snickers.

I'm pretty sure you were around for that one. Repressed memories, perhaps? You may have been traumatized by the bald-faced lying.

It could have been the time I wasn't around and you guys thought (or at least made her think anyway) that I was Poison Lotus.

Oh yeah. I forgot you dropped off the radar a couple times.
This was during the second week of the BH invasion, when most of the idiots ran off and ATVile was desperately trying to get some reaction out of anyone. Besides mocking laughter, that is.

Already has been suggested, and it's a terrible tactic. I usually assume that the other person has run off after they don't reply for days upon days, but post elsewhere in the forum.

Perhaps whats done is done and like a bitch you just talk too much? Obviously it soothes you to assume victory.
