On a certain fangame's forum, just like the project, the forum is slowly dying. Back when it was active, I used to be more of a Big Cat (my preferred role) there, chasing interesting threads, joking around, and clawing up those who rubbed me the wrong way. Sadly, as the forum grew more and more dead (like the project). One of the new mods brought in a Net Rat spammer. This Net Rat, though spammy, was likeable and his presence was accepted by the remaining members of the forum.
Now unfortunately, we have another punk hanging around the boards who is obnoxious and acts like he owns the place (always a pain in the ass). He first joined a while ago and managed to get his dumb self banned. He came back about 6 months later with a new account and a lesson learned, suck up to the mods and you can do anything you want as long as you don't curse or post links to pr0n or warez. His presence has made a fair number of other vets leave the forum who simply have gotten tired of the inane amount of fluff posts.
It's a complicated situation, I'm trying to protect my turf and the order of the forum, but I'm not in good standing with one of the mods, so she sometimes tries to protects him in battle. The other mod just follows her lead and tries to act as a Nanny. However, she doesn't really like him and finds his sycophantic behaviors irksome.
So far, he's been both dumb and smart. In any head to head confrontation with myself, he consistantly gets his ass handed to him (which has been quite numerous already). But he's smart enough to bow out when defeated, rather than continue. But he's always back with the same antics in another thread, I go there, rip him a new one, he bows out and the process repeats. I'm going to have to be careful that I don't slip up considering the number of times he's been pwnd. He may grow up to be a powerful warrior one day if he wisens up.
I'm tempted to leave the forum, but even though it's dying, it's one of my homes and I don't like to see it ruined. To the mods' credit they have done a lot to keep it alive (both good and bad). |

Strangely enough, I would say mentor him - I had a similar situation a while ago, made friends with the kid, gave her all kinds of suggestions about how to post better, and wound up with a friend who has turned into quite a good researcher and poster. _________________ The Average Woman Would Rather Have Beauty Than Brains Because The Average Man Can See Better Than He Can Think |

| Bah! I think you need to drive a wedge between the moderators but your weakness is that you're trying to maintain forum order. I think you have mutually exclusive goals that can only be resolved through the hated mechanism of diplomacy. |

First, if the forum is dying you might as well finish it off rather than delaying the inevitable. I say sow discord amounts the mods, and chase down this one member you keep pwning and crush him deftly as an example to any who would oppose you.

Yeah, the old mods were cool, but the new ones don't know what they're doing. I know both mods fairly well, and the weaker one is my friend, despite her incapability (lets call her ModB).
The fallout from publicly destroying the place would create too much excess damage on related forums, and one that I manage. They know me too well and I don't have allied warriors to stop any counter-attacks. About the best I could do is provoke the spammers into a total spamfest the likes of which have never before been seen in on this board.
I agree with Guff and LC, trying to maintain order has been counter-productive. I've been fairly successful at driving a wedge between the two mods. When these two first started out, they were a two-headed cyber-sister, but more and more their views divirge. I just wish ModB would stand up to the bitchy ModA more often. But she's a non-confrontational asian school girl without superpowers, so whattayagonna do.
I'm still on the fence on whether I should try to train the guy with what wisdom I have or crush him... I'm going to give him more time and watch him. I've baited him enough to find weakspots, I just have to prepare myself for techniques that are not typically my style. |

OoOoO... did you guys somehow code that whenever the word Guff is typed, the proper font is displayed?
Heck, I thought everyone was merely showing their proper deference as opposed to having no say in the matter.
Not that I'm complaining. If only I knew how to sneak that code to other forums that I reside in.
Let's test this out. Ahem. Guff. Guff afternoon. Why don't you Guff fuck yourself.
Edit: By golly, it seems people are just showing their proper deference. Very good. Carry on then.
Edit to Edit: Or perhaps this insidious coding is merely not applicable to the messages that I type. I will have to ponder this most interesting subject further. |

I don't think we can give you good advice on saving it unless you're more specific. Is it dying from Implosion or a fatal activity/interest lull? It'd be easier to lend a hand if we had a better grasp on the problem.

There's no code involved. These people can clearly read the writing on the wall, and are paying their dues. _________________

The forum is dying because the game project is dying, I'm a former member who worked on the programming and plot end of the game and in the past year, barely anything has been done. It was rather frustrating, the team members forum has always been in worse shape than the visitors... Anyway, I could go on for hours on this project's woes and the frustrations of dealing with a huge, leaderless team with no direction, but this is about the visitor's forum.
So, as an update, two spammers have turned into Convoers and talk all over the forum. After a few more pwnings and surprise attacks, the annoying spammer has admitted my forum superiority and has ceased being such a little b1tch. I've returned to my role that's something more akin to an ill-tempered Big Cat.
The wedge between ModA and ModB has grown further. ModA encourages the conversations and doesn't really hang around the forums much, and it's pissing off ModB who is having to deal with all of it. Her skin's getting thicker and her head is getting cooler. I have to give her some extra props, considering she's started a successful chat Role Playing session that has kept those still around, including myself, from leaving. |

Man, that royally sucks. What type of game? MMORPG? MUD? Web-based CGI? _________________

| It's an old school computer adventure game, with action elements mixed in. I think the project is at least 6 years old and has gone through probably over 100 members. |

Hmm. In that case, my only advice would be to try revitalizing it by revitalizing the project. Maybe start on a new (major) version of the game, ask for suggestions on what to add, what pisses people of, etc. Unfortunately, that is a heavy undertaking. _________________

Yeah, the problem is that trying to do anything would always get shouted down by the old guard, who are basically just a bunch of guys who control the project (especially the admins), don't work on it anymore, and would never *ever* change their ways out of principal. Basically, they are trying to make a game by democracy or some such... which by the way is really stupid when you have an enormous group with wildly varying artistic visions and when you let almost any asshat join). Apparently, in the years before I arrived they somehow wound up with an arbitrary nutjob for their leader. He was so unstable that in a disagreement he just deleted all their work and kicked them off website they were using (he owned it). Somewhat like a Godzilla attack, the members who experienced that were never the same again.
So far, there have been several projects that have been started from fed up ex-members, but so far only one group has ever been successful. Though, they used questional methods of ripping artwork from other games, editing them, and then claiming them as their own.
Personally, I'm content to let the project die. There are other projects and I have my own hobbies. Trying to seize control of the project is simply more work than I care to do or have time for.
ModB has decided to take a break, she simply got fed up with the forums and the fact that ModA was encouraging the spam and didn't like ModB telling them to cut it out. ModA's reasons were that it makes the forums look active, but ModB has more forum prestige than ModA, so they've actually cut back. |

Oh yeah. You said it. Democracy: Good for governing people, bad for everything else. Projects need a dictator.
Sorry it's gone to shit. Maybe you can use the game's collapse as a giant post-mortum example in future projects. _________________

| Leave the forum, let the project die, and keep all your done material on a CD of sorts. Might come in handy for later projects, which I hope will be govered by someone with a cool head. |

Right now, I'm at the point where I'm mostly just fighting just to fight. For glory and testing my skills and whatnot. ModA (I really should have given these people better annonymous names) has set me in her sights and is now attacking me directly. She's a far more formidable opponent than Annoying Spammer, but still not overly strong aside from her position of authority as an Admin.
So far, I've countered ModA's points effectively but she's gained a couple weak Me Too's on her side, one of them being AS. In a cunning move, she tried to start a private chat with me, but I succesfully deflected it for the time being. I want this fight to stay public. A Royal recently jumped in on my side for support. Right now ModA is fighting ModB, myself, and a Royal. She has AS and another weaker, but long time member, as allies.
Sadly, AS seems to be too much of a Palooka to go down. His hatred of me (getting him to admit it was a nice victory), combined with his arrogance keeps him coming back for more beatings. Aside from his tenacity, he is not worth befriending.
Likeable Spammer and everyone else seem to be sitting on the sidelines watching.
I take this stuff too seriously sometimes.
EDIT: ModA has quit... there are currently no active moderators. I believe my objective is complete.
Just to back up my claims, I'll probably post a link to the thread in a couple days after I see where this leads. |

Maybe the best course of action would be a nice psychotic breakdown. Go all Jekyll and Hyde on their asses. Then blame it on your allergies. _________________

My sources inside the project tell me there is a good chance that the visitor forums will be shut down till the project is finished , so it's best I link it now.
Anyway, here's the thread.
Corsair is the Annoying Spammer, he's pretty much a Net Rat and Enfant Provocateur pwning him is fun, but no challenge.
Ignus is another Net Rat who's been around for a long time.
The aptly named Pwincess is ModA.
Swift is ModB.
Brassfire is a Royal and former prestigious member of the project.
What fun is a little chaos without someone to show it to? |
