Before an invasion occurs, the forum(s) involved may experience a Calm before the storm. This can be identified by a large number of users online with very little posting. This can often be explained by the rapid-fire PM's, IM's and e-mails that are consuming writing time, thus limiting actual posts produced.

Perhaps it was better this way as the soldiers remained tense and alert without the benefit of the dehydrated melencholy that in more modern times would be referred to as the hang-over.

Shortly formations would be called and one opponent would have sent a small party to distract their opposing force. This time is bereft of noises from animals except for the horses and the various cattle which had dwindled recently as many encampments remained un moved since their recent arrival. The supply caravans have since moved away bringing with them the squirls, wild boars, pheasants, and growses that would normally inhabit the field. Even they sinced the looming onslaught of cavalry and infantry as stones are slung, arrows are drawn, swords are sharpenned, and strategies practiced.

For some not know the hell of battle yet and in their folley are content to think the theme romantic. The battle tested keep their mouths shut for they know fear to be contageous and that these fools, in their folly, would occupy their own place in front of the sword. The look on their faces send the virgin soldiers messages of bravado as each makes double the effort to contain the fear of knowing from experience.

A messenger returns having reconoiterred the opposing camp with great alarm to inform the general that the camp fires have been left unattended. Across the camp with great urgency he moves to the tent containing the strategy of this opperation. Closer to the tent he draws a breath with each step, panicked with his message, but before he can make known his fateful knowlege bolt is utterred from a crossbow from a nearby grove of trees and the messenger has located the king for the enemies assassin.
